Homemade lavender lip balm recipe

You guys seem to love natural lavender skin care products, and I am here for it! After sharing my lavender soap and lavender sugar scrub, it’s time for a homemade lavender lip balm recipe.

A blend of nourishing lavender infused oil, luxurious shea butter, and fragrant lavender essential oil comes together easily, leaving you with a fragrant pot of DIY lavender lip balm. The silky texture melts into the skin and your lips will feel soft and supple.

Is lavender good for lips?

What is lavender lip balm good for? Lavender essential oil is a multipurpose oil with many benefits for lip care. The oil does a stellar job at and balancing the skin’s moisture barrier. It also boosts potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that soothe itchy, irritated lips.

Furthermore, lavender oil is a potent source of antioxidants and other beneficial phytochemicals, which are useful to battle signs of wrinkles and premature ageing. Antioxidants fight free radical damage, which is caused by environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution.

Lavender lip balm ingredients

I kept the ingredient list short and simple. Lavender is used in two ways in this lip balm recipe. First, we use dried lavender buds to create a lavender infusion. Then, we also add a few drops lavender essential oil to the balm.

Here’s a quick overview of the materials we need:

  • fractionated coconut oil – Coconut oil keeps dry lips moisturised and healthy looking.
  • dried lavender – I used dried lavender to make a fragrant herbal infusion, which is the base for this lip balm recipe. You can also use fresh lavender if it is available to you.
  • white beeswax or soy wax – This lip balm recipe can be made with beeswax or soy wax if vegan. I talk more about the benefits of each wax below.
  • raw shea butter – Shea butter is very moisturizing and gives the DIY lip balm structure.
  • lavender essential oil – The essential oil provides additional lip care benefits and a rich lavender scent.

How to make lavender lip balm

How do you make lavender lip balm? Let me show you the easy steps for how to make lavender lip balm:

  • Make the lavender infusion. Fill a small pot with water and bring to a mild simmer. Add the coconut oil and dried lavender. Infuse for 20 minutes. Warm at the lowest possible temperature to avoid burning the ingredients and add more water if necessary. I used a melting pot for this, but a Turkish coffee pot would also work.
  • Strain the lavender infused oil. Strain the oil through a coffee filter or a fine-mesh tea infuser to remove the solids and discard the lavender. Make sure to squeeze out as much of the oil as possible.
  • Melt the ingredients. Warm the wax, shea butter, and infused oil in the water bath until everything has melted. Stir occasionally as you go.
  • Add essential oil. Take the mixture off the heat and add the lavender essential oil. Stir to combine.
  • Pour the balm. Pour the lip balm mixture into the containers and let cool until the balm is solid. While cooling, the balm will change from transparent to opaque. After cooling, put on the lid.

How can I make vegan lavender lip balm without beeswax?

Yes, you can easily make vegan lavender lip balm without beeswax. Candelilla wax, carnauba wax, berry fruit wax, almond wax, and soy wax are all suitable alternatives for beeswax in lip balm.

Since I always get questions about ingredient swaps, I prepared this DIY lip balm recipe with white beeswax and with soy wax. Soy wax will create a moisturizing lip balm, while beeswax will give you a protective lip balm.

Here is how beeswax vs soy wax in lip balm compare:

  • lip balm with soy: It takes longer for the lip balm to set. The finished product is also much softer than lip balm with beeswax and has a lower melting point. The texture is silky and moisturizing, and your lips won’t feel waxy.
  • lip balm with beeswax: This balm sets quickly and has a harder consistency. The balm has a higher melting point, which might be an advantage if you live in a hot state. The texture is very smooth and less greasy than the soy version. Lip balm with beeswax creates a protective film on the skin, but the balm is less hydrating compared to soy wax lip balm.

In the end, it comes down to personal preference. I liked both varieties. If you are using strictly vegan skin care, then the lip balm with soy wax or another vegan wax is the way to go.

Otherwise, do your own experiment and let me know which version you like better.

What can I use for lip balm without shea butter and coconut oil?

And while we’re on the topic of ingredient swaps, here are more substitutions you can make:

  • lip balm without shea butter: Avocado butter and mango butter are good alternatives to shea butter.
  • lip balm without coconut oil: Avocado oil or grapeseed oil can be used instead of fractionated coconut oil.

What can I use instead of lavender to make homemade lip balm?

Lastly, you can also replace the lavender with another herb, such as dried calendula, elderflowers, chamomile, or rose petals. Each of these materials has unique skincare benefits and is excellent for herbal lip balm.

Storage and shelf life

How to store lavender lip balm

When not in use, store your herbal lip balm in a dry, cool place, for example a cupboard or drawer.

Remember that lip balm is heat sensitive, so avoid exposure to direct sunlight and heat sources. If your place isn’t air-conditioned, consider stashing the balm in the fridge for the summer.

How long does lavender lip balm last?

DIY lavender lip balm will last for 2 years if stored in cool dry conditions.

Does lip balm melt?

Yes, lavender lip balm melts in high temperatures. The balm is solid at room temperature (or air condition), but will melt in conditions above room temperature.

The melting point depends on the type of wax used. As mentioned, soy wax melts quicker than beeswax.

If you live in a hot state and want to carry lip balm in your purse or store in the car during summer, package the lip balm container in a small plastic bag to avoid balm melting and oozing out.

Tin containers or small jar, like you see on the photos, are usually safe. But plastic applicators can leak.
